Science Curriculum: Grades K-5

The Elementary School Science curriculum at Philo Classical Academy introduces young learners to the wonders of the natural world, fostering curiosity and a love for exploration. Beginning in Kindergarten, students observe farm life, progressing to forest ecosystems and broader environmental studies in 1st and 2nd grades. By 3rd grade, they explore the Earth’s physical structure, followed by an introduction to astronomy in 4th grade. In 5th grade, students learn the scientific method, preparing them for structured inquiry in middle school while cultivating a foundational understanding of scientific principles.

Kindergarten: Farm Life

Kindergarteners are introduced to science through "God Made the Animals" by The Good and the Beautiful, focusing on farm life. This course explores animals, plants, and seasonal cycles on a farm, encouraging observation and appreciation of nature while aligning with the classical, values-based approach of the academy.

1st Grade: Forest Life

Students explore forest ecosystems using "Over and Under the Woodland" by Kate Messner, which introduces forest animals, trees, and their interactions. Through vivid narratives and illustrations, 1st graders develop curiosity and observation skills, building on their Kindergarten experience with a deeper focus on natural environments.

2nd Grade: Ecosystems

Students expand their understanding of ecosystems with "Ecosystems" by The Good and the Beautiful, covering diverse environments like wetlands and deserts. This course includes hands-on activities, teaching 2nd graders how living things interact with their surroundings, fostering a broader perspective on ecological relationships.

3rd Grade: Terrain/Geology

Students study Earth’s physical structure using "Geology Rocks!" by Cindy Blobaum, which introduces rocks, minerals, soil, and landforms. Through hands-on experiments, 3rd graders explore geological concepts, laying a foundation for understanding Earth science in a classical, inquiry-based context.

4th Grade: Solar System

Students delve into astronomy with "Exploring Creation with Astronomy" by Jeannie Fulbright (Apologia, Young Explorer Series), covering planets, stars, and the sun. This course encourages 4th graders to explore Earth’s place in the universe, fostering wonder through a Charlotte Mason-inspired approach that aligns with classical education principles.

5th Grade: Scientific Method

Students learn the scientific method using "The Scientific Method" by Joey Hajjar, focusing on hypothesis, experimentation, observation, and conclusion. This course equips 5th graders with the tools for structured inquiry, preparing them for middle school science while reinforcing critical thinking through practical examples and activities.
